The Palfrey At New Inn

Tucked away on Hopping Hill in Milford, The Palfrey At New Inn isn't just another countryside restaurant-it’s an experience. With its beautifully restored setting and an inviting fireplace that instantly sets the tone, this women-owned gem brings a blend of rustic charm and elevated dining that’s hard to come by in the Derbyshire area. Whether you’re just passing through or you're a local foodie in the know, this spot deserves your attention.

Step into the dining room and you’ll find a warm ambiance that strikes the perfect balance between relaxed and refined. With options for outdoor seating, it’s an ideal place to catch some fresh air while sipping something special from their impressive beer and wine list. Speaking of drinks, if you're someone who cares about a curated bar, you're in luck-their cocktail game is seriously strong. Think perfectly mixed White Russians, craft beers, and a tea selection that surprises with both range and quality.

Now, let’s talk about the food-the real reason why The Palfrey At New Inn has become a destination in itself. The Sunday Roast Beef here is a local legend. It’s the kind of dish that reminds you why Sundays were made for slow dining. Tender, juicy cuts of beef served with all the traditional trimmings make it a go-to for anyone craving comfort with a gourmet twist. If pork’s more your style, the Pork Belly delivers on richness and depth, balancing crispiness with melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Vegetarians aren't left out either. The Goats Cheese Tart offers a flavorful punch, beautifully presented and light enough to make room for dessert. And let’s not pretend you’ll skip dessert-the Sticky Toffee Pudding alone is worth the trip. Rich, warm, and perfectly paired with custard, it’s a dish that lingers in your memory long after the last spoonful.

For steak lovers, there’s no shortage of options. From the Flat Iron Steak to a Fillet Steak that’s seared to perfection, the meat here speaks for itself. Local ingredients like Derbyshire Beef add that regional flair which elevates every bite. The kitchen team doesn't shy away from creativity either. Seasonal touches like Gazpacho in warmer months or a hearty Chicken Pie of the Day keep things fresh and ever-changing.

Want something a little different? The Duck Breast with Choy Sum brings a modern fusion feel to the menu, while a chilled Cider rounds things off with a laid-back vibe. Even the humble Fried Chicken feels special here-crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and served with just the right kick of seasoning. Their Lamb dishes are equally celebrated for their flavor-forward approach, especially when paired with the right wine.

Beyond the food and drink, the space itself contributes to the restaurant’s charm. It’s cozy without being cramped, stylish without feeling pretentious, and welcoming in every sense. Ideal for lunch dates, casual dinners, or even solo dining with a good book and a glass of red. It’s also one of the few places around that hits high marks across the board-from great coffee and healthy options to vegetarian-friendly dishes and strong spirit offerings.

A notable feature is the no-delivery, no-takeaway policy. And honestly, that’s part of the charm. You come here for the experience, not just the food. It encourages you to slow down, unplug, and savor the moment.

The Palfrey At New Inn is more than a restaurant-it’s a reminder of what good dining should feel like. Thoughtfully sourced ingredients, talented chefs, a welcoming team, and a space designed for conversation and connection. Whether you're raising a glass to the weekend or simply seeking a place that gets every detail right, this Belper favorite delivers time and time again.

Service was fantastic, shout-out to Kieran being accommodating with some late arrivals, topping up drinks when needed and overall being friendly and personable with the group. Food I wouldn’t say was AS good but perhaps I’m expecting the same standard as when I last visited which was April 24. The main part of the dish such as steak was fab, but the chips and the greens were just okay, standard. This didn’t cause much detriment to our visit, we would just love to see more creative sides with more intense flavour at our next visit. To finish off, as I’ve already stated, the highlight of the night really was the service, checking in throughout and making us feel comfortable. Thanks!!

This restaurant is very good, from the point that you sit down at your table. Prior to that, it feels more like a busy bar, where you have to get the attention of the bar staff. I had the curry wurst that was delicious, then slow cooked steak, that fell apart without effort. I finished with dark chocolate and hazelnut tart. I had two glasses of red wine that were fully oxygenated and served at the right temperature. All-in-all, it's worth every penny.
